Student: Kathryn Seitz

From: United States

Kathryn was a university student in New York before coming to Hangzhou to learn Chinese. She knew she didn't want to study in Beijing or Shanghai, the most known Chinese cities where many foreigners are living. So she asked her professor at the university for advice about which city in China she should go instead. You must go to Hangzhou, which is a very beautiful and cultural city, she was told. And here she was, learning Mandarin Chinese in Hangzhou.

"One thing wonderful about Hangzhou is that there are not many foreigners living here. So you don't end up talking to each other in English. And you see the authentic China." Kathryn said.

"My experience so far here has been extremely enjoyable. The small classes give me many opportunities to practice speaking, interact with other students, and ask questions.  

"It was the best choice I made in all of China," she said.

Dear Professor Chen and Teacher Wu, I had a marvellous time in Hangzhou. Thank you for welcoming me to your home. Your hospitality, guidance, and patience in helping me to practice Mandarin contributed a lot to making the holiday so successful. I'm attaching some photos that I took. I also greatly enjoyed the course at the Chinesetown school. I thought the teaching standards, organisation and value for money were excellent.

我叫高真淑。我是韩国人。我突然到中国杭州来了。在韩国没学习汉语。第一次汉语发音很难。最近语法很难。汉语越学越难。汉语有点儿难但中国生活很有意思。我来杭州6个月了。 6个月期间，中国文化有点儿明白了。韩国文化和中国文化不太一样。学院老师们全都很热情。女校长给我水果（龙眼）特别好吃。黄老师，她是善良的心和身材苗条。王老师，她是嘴唇魅力和精明强干的人。胡老师，她是性格明朗和眼睛很漂亮。杭州夏天天气很热。 3个月期间 很大的帮助，真是非常感谢！学院所有的人，一路顺风。 再见。

I want to say thanks again for the nice treatment in your school (...gongsi...) and - as far as you should not have recognized yet - point out, what a gorigious teacher Min Mi is. Don't want to mention her marvelous didactic and methodic qualities as a teacher, but in adition she is also very committed and ambitious. She allways taught much longer as she had to and prepared usefull vocabulary-lists in her free time to groom me for the daily life in China. Hold her in high regard! I guess, somebody like her is difficult to find.

I am glad to have received your photo which reminds me a very unusual student period I haven't had since long time. It has been like drinking to youth source for 2 weeks. I want you rest assured I enjoyed the course very much and I feel much more confortable because my understanding is improved drastically. Maybe my accent is still far from the right one but I am sure it will be better. And in any case now I now were ask help to improve.
